Description

While AI tools can be powerful in helping create or polish CVs, there are several reasons to be cautious about fully relying on AI for CV revamps in the Kenyan job market context.
Here’s why:
 1. Loss of Authenticity
AI-generated CVs often sound overly polished, generic, or “Westernized.” Kenyan employers, especially HR professionals, can quickly tell when a CV doesn’t reflect the candidate’s true experience or writing style. They can detect an AI generated CV from a mile away. This can lead to mistrust; they might doubt whether the applicant actually possesses the skills and achievements written down.
2. Context Mismatch
AI tools are often trained on international data (mainly from the U.S. and Europe). They may not understand Kenyan job titles, industries, or qualification systems (e.g., CHRP, HELB, KUCCPS, or KNEC levels). As a result, the CV might use terms or structures that don’t fit local expectations.
3. Unrealistic Achievements and Phrasing
AI tends to overstate or generalize accomplishments (“increased efficiency by 40%”) even when the data doesn’t exist. This can backfire in interviews when the recruiter asks for evidence. Authentic, specific, and measurable local achievements carry more weight in Kenya’s practical job market.
4. Bias and Inaccuracy
AI may misrepresent timelines, rearrange roles incorrectly, or make grammatical changes that alter meaning. It may also unknowingly introduce biases (e.g., gendered language or assumptions about career paths).
5. Data Privacy Risks
When you upload your CV to free or unverified AI tools online: You risk exposing your personal information (ID, contacts, workplace details) to third parties. In Kenya, data protection laws (under the Data Protection Act, 2019) prohibit unauthorized use or storage of personal data.
6. Loss of Personal Voice
A CV should sound like you, highlighting your story, tone, and professionalism. AI might strip away your personality, making your application sound like everyone else’s. Recruiters often appreciate a touch of individuality, especially for HR, communication, and creative roles.
✅ What You Can Do Instead
Use AI as a support tool, not a replacement:
Let it help you structure, summarize, or check grammar.
Then localize and personalize it, include Kenyan terms, organizations, and examples that reflect your actual experience.
Finally, have a human HR professional or career coach review it before submission.
